Wife & I visiting the RGV June 1-2-3, What to see & do?

We are bringing our daughter down to settle in to a new job in Harlingen. Other than getting her settled in, what should we try to see or do over that weekend? We want to get a good "feel" of her new home area if possible.

Places to Eat

In Harlingen, you can try La Playa. There is two. The one on Sunshine strip is better.

The other two places I would recommend is on South Padre Island. At one time it was ranked as one of the top 500 restaurants in Texas. You will get a view of a marina with all types of boats while you eat. If you are on a budget, then I would recommend Black Beards at the Island. Good price, good food, good atmosphere, and it's on the island.

June 1-2-3 Visit

General sightseeing, a variety of shopping, and great places to eat or our interests for the weekend. We would like to go to a "don't miss" restraunt or two while we are there. A place that locals love that is not part of a chain is what we are looking for. Jackson St., along with the mentioned downtown shopping of McAllen and Brownsville are great ideas. BTW, we are from the Beaumont TX area. Thank you for the responses!
Jackson Street Market Days, La Plaza Mall, and Stuff

On June 2nd, you should be able to attend Jackson Street Market Day. It is the first Saturday of every month. They will have all types of vendors and usually live music. However, for the most part Harlingen is a location to get away from it all. La Plaza Mall is a great place to visit if you like mall shopping. It currently boasts about 17,000,000 visitors a year. If you are really looking for the feel of the area, shopping in downtown McAllen and Brownsville is a must.

Let us know your hobbies and we can probably pinpoint some other activities.

Thank you Sylvia. Would you happen to know if the Jackson Street Market Day will be going on June 1-3? Is that a good place to visit? Also, what abot "La Plaza"? Anything you can tell us is appreciated, thanks!
Places to visit

Depending on where you are coming from, there are a lot of restaurants that serve authentic mexican food that may be new to you. Try it. Be sure to visit South Padre Island and make sure you actually participate in the various activities there. You could spend a lazy day at the beach as well. The possibilities of what you can do are endless. The weather is great but do not forget the sun screen and sun glasses.
The sun can be brutal sometimes! Remember to hydrate all the time. Enjoy your visit and experience a new culture down at the Rio Grande Valley. If you get lost, do not hesitate to ask for directions as the people are very friendly.
