THE VALLEY

by daniel
(Edinburg, Tx)

Ever since I moved here from the San Joaquin Valley in northern California, I always wondered why this area is called The Valley.

In Modesto, you can see the mountains in almost every direction if your on a tall rooftop. So we call it The Valley because it is one. But why does everyone here call this desert like place The Valley when there is no mountains which would define it as a Valley? Do you know? Why not call it The Mountain? Please help

Delta
by: Fandango

The Rio Grand Valley is a delta or flood plain. It was called a valley to make it look and sound better so new and more people would move or invest down here.

Daniel's request

I don't know if someone answered your request. If you will find a good history book on the Rio Grande Valley or visit a good museum you may find your answer. I have read that it was a catchy title used to lure settlers to the rich farm lands of the Valley in the early 1900s.

Find the book "El Valle The Rio Grand Delta" by Seth Patterson and Lawrence Lof. It will be an eye opener if you are new to the Valley.

It's a big valley
by: Tim

I would agree. Most people think of a valley having mountains around it. However, technically speaking a valley just has 3 side higher in elevation. Remember, The Valley is just not a sliver along the river. It's multiple counties and some are stacked.

If you look far enough West, North, and South, you will see the southern tip of Texas is surrounded by higher elevation areas. Thus, a Valley. Also, FYI, rivers are usually located in valley's. This is the easy way to spot a vally on a map.
