Smokin Pit - Mission

by Tracy Epp
(Weslaco, TX, USA)

An authentic Texas bbq joint with delicious food and quick service. I go often for lunch and find it to be the best bbq in the Valley. Service is quick and good and prices are very reasonable (nothing over $10, most plates $6.95) The place is small--about 8 tables for four and a few spots at the counter. But there is a nice surprise out back-- outdoor seating- a rarity in the Valley and while it's too hot to enjoy during the summer, it makes a great spot in the late fall and winter.

All meats are smoked with mesquite in the onsite smokehouse.

I've had nearly everything on the menu and have not been disappointed. My favorite is the chicken. It has a good smoky flavor and is super juicy. The ribs fall off the bone. I love it all. The sides are beans, rice and a unique potato salad. Rice is yummy but my new fave is the potato salad which has bits of bacon and is almost like a whipped potato salad--different and good. I'm told by the owner that it's all homemade on site-nothing out of a plastic tub.

The word on the street is they are expanding to offer beer and wine; currently BYOB. They also do catering.

104 N. Mayberry; Mission. Monday-Saturday, 11:00am-4:00pm

My mouth is watering--too bad they're closed on Sundays.
