Shrine of La Virgen de San Juan

Shrine of La Virgen de San Juan del Valle

The Shrine of La Virgen de San Juan del Valle is a catholic church located right off the highway in San Juan. You can’t miss it. It has a huge picture facing the highway.

As you walk around the complex, you will notice a large collection of statues. These scenes depict the time from when Jesus being sentenced to death till his burial. According to the official website, "In 1623, an acrobat traveling with his wife and children stopped in San Juan de los Lagos to give a performance. While practicing their act, the youngest daughter lost her balance and was killed. As her grieving parents prepared her burial, an Indian woman who was the caretaker of the church, brought the image of the Virgin Mary to them and begged the parents to place the image over their daughter's body and prayed for the Virgin's intercession. After placing the Virgin's image over the body of the child (according to the story related to the Bishop years later and following a meticulous investigation of the event) the child was brought back to life.*"

Free Holy water

The holy water if free. However, I thought it odd how there was multiple people there filling up 2 o 3 gallon jugs of water.

The Entrace to the Shrine of La Virgen de San Juan del Valle

As you walk around the outside of the building they play what is going on inside over loudspeakers.

Inside the shrine

I visited the Shrine of La Virgen de San Juan del Valle on a Thursday at 12:00. There was more people here at this time than many churches on a Sunday morning. Over 1 million people come to visit per year.
