Rio Grande Valley Martial Arts Spotlight on Sifu Luis M. Leal
How long have you studied Martial Arts and why did you start?
I
started when I was 15 years old. I lived in a tough neighborhood and my mom gave
me permission to take Tae Kwon Do in high school for free.
What do you believe the main purpose of Martial Arts is?
It
helps people develop discipline and gives them inner strength.
Why is tradition important in Martial Arts?
Tradition will teach you the reason for why things are done the way they are
done. It passes down history, etiquette, knowledge and it maintains the lives of
those who lived before us.
How many systems have you received a black belt in and what are
they?
I
have received a 4th degree in Lao Hu Pai, 2nd degree in
Aikijutsu, 3rd degree in Sekki Guchi Ryu (sword), 3rd
degree in Won Hop Loong Chuan, a black belt in Shotokan Karate (Ed Hamiley West
Coast Shotokan Karate) not certified and I am certified in Yuan Style Tai Chi.
Why is La Ho Pi your favorite system?
There are 2 main reasons. The first being that it teaches everything you ever
wanted to know regarding Martial Arts. It is totally complete. Second, I am the
heir to the system.
What was the hardest thing about achieving your first black belt?
The vows I had to take were the hardest. However, they were also the most
important.
Tell us about your trip to Japan to learn the sword?
I
was transported to a different culture, world, and environment. While I was in
Japan, I became a true Japanese Samurai. They take martial arts very seriously.
Tradition is very important. They believe loyalty is something that should not
be betrayed. The experience I received from going to Japan was invaluable.
How has Martial Arts helped you become successful in other areas
of your life?
I
was able to meet a lot of people and see many sights.
