About the Rio Grande Valley

Jobs in the Rio Grande Valley.

The Rio Grande Valley is located at the most southern part of Texas along the Rio Grande River. Unless, you’re from “The Valley” you probably have no idea how far south it is. For example, Brownsville is further south than Miami, Florida.  When I speak to friends in the northern part of the U.S. and tell them I live in the most southern part of Texas, they say, “You mean like San Antonio?” Yea, just keep driving another 4 and ½ hours.

"The Valley" is considered a tropical paradise for some. This accounts for the over 150,000 people that come to escape harsh winters up north. Some call them “Snowbirds.” I call them good for the economy. Thank you. The temperatures The Valley average close to 100 degrees in July and just under 70 degrees in January. If you’re trying to avoid snow this is the place to do it. It rarely dips below freezing and it has only snowed 3 times in the last 50 years. Whether you are looking for a vacation full of fishing and diving or relaxing on a beach, the Rio Grande Valley will have something interesting for everyone.

Brownsville, one of the Valley's largest cities, is home to the Gladys Porter Zoo and the Valley Wing of the Commemorative Air Force. Brownsville also hosts one of the biggest Hispanic events, Charro Days, a celebration of the Hispanic heritage. Mariachi bands and authentic Mexican food and dancing, draw tourists in from all over to experience a burst of culture from our neighboring country.

Harlingen, another of the Valley's largest cities, is home for Riofest. Celebrating art and Western history, equipped with a make believe Western town, it is fit for all ages interested in art culture. It’s also home to the Marine Military Academy which has the original Iwo Jima Memorial and some of the nation's top medical facilities.

McAllen, the largest city in the upper Valley, is a key spot for visitors and has been deemed the honor of being “the Square Dance Capital of the World.” McAllen is also known for it's abundance of cultural events all year that attract all kinds of tourists. According to www.mcallen.org, “McAllen is home to 24 of America's top 100 retail outlets, many of which are among the most profitable stores in their chains.”

San Juan, home to the Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan Del Valle National Shrine, isn't a larger city, but draws in thousands of visitors yearly to come and view the shrine.

One of the most known and popular tourist sites of the Rio Grande Valley is the South Padre Island. The South Padre Island has been known for its beaches, shopping, and events for all ages. Sports, such as windsurfing, scuba diving, and snorkeling are very popular. The Laguna Madre bay is one of the world's top windsurfing destinations. The SPI Windsurf Blowout is also held here. Many come from all over to experience the fun filled adventure of course and long distance races. Tours, dolphin watching, and nightlife at the clubs are just a few extra attractions that add to the popularity of this Island.

Parks, such as the 588 acre Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park and the 115,600-acre Falcon Dam, Lake and State Park, are also popular places to visit while down south. The Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park attracts birders from all over to look for unknown species and to view the park's breathtaking natural beauty. The Falcon Dam, Lake and State Park offer fishing, skiing, camping, and picnics for those seeking an outdoor vacation. The Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge is a 50,000-acre federal preserve and is the Rio Grande Valley's biggest wildlife reserve. It is home to many species of birds and animals. Chimney Park, named this for it's chimney that used to power irrigation pumps, is located in Mission. It has a ramp for docking so you can enjoy its clubs and restaurants. So no matter what type of entertainment, food, education, or adventure you are looking for, the Rio Grande Valley is sure to have it. Take a look into Rio Grande Valley and find the vacation you are searching for.
