HIDALGO COUNTY JUDGE ?
I believe our local politics is an important part of our life. Unfortunately, too many people avoid the issue or don’t take the time to get involved. Ramon Garcia is running for Hidalgo County Judge for a second time. He was nice enough to send in something about himself to our site. Why not take a moment and read what he has to say. It might help you make an informed decision.

The unemployment rate in RGV is now upwards of 11%.
I would like to thank our visitor for communicating the following message to us.
I just thought it would be appropriate to bring the following fact to your attention. The unemployment rate in RGV is now upwards of 11%. Why not update your information on your site? Otherwise, this might create a false sense of security for people wanting to relocate here. Take this as creative criticism and not negative input.
My response would be as follows: Yes, according to The Monitor, we are above 11%. However, I believe, if we took percentages of people actually looking for work and not being picky on what the job was, the percentage would be lower compared to the rest of the country. (I'm sure that came out all wrong. Feel free to blast away.) For example, Stay at home moms (which is the best job ever), semi-retired people, people that get paid more for not working.
Second as to updating the website, feel free to do so. I've always envisioned this as a community site. If you would like to update any article or add one, please feel free to do so. You can take full credit for writing it, as long as I own it. :)
The 3rd reason for both of the above is "it's a money thing."

Living History Demonstration
In May of 1846, 8,000 soldiers from the United States and Mexico took up arms on battlefields near the Rio Grande. More than 160 years later, their sacrifices and the battles they fought have largely been forgotten.
Come join Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park as it remembers this service. On November 13 and 14 living history programs will showcase the lives of 19th century soldiers. On November 14, we will light 8,000 candles to honor the soldiers of two nations who answered the call of duty and made history.

Once again the coast of Texas is being looked at for wind power. "Pavilion Energy Resources has submitted a multi-billion dollar proposal to the state of Texas to develop a massive wind energy project located in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of South Padre Island." I think it's a good use of available space.

The Ghost Fleet
Behind barbed-wire fences and squintingly small entrance signs, the shipbreaking yards sit almost anonymously on the banks of the Brownsville Ship Channel, three miles from the Mexico border.
Workers park their beat-up cars nearby in rutted lots. They cross paths every day with asbestos, lead, PCBs and other toxics lurking in the old ships they dismantle, earning about $7 an hour.
Yet there is never a shortage of applicants.

McAllen - It's up when it's down; it's down when it's up.
As I looked at the news today, I noticed McAllen seems to be in conflict with itself as of late. In particular, two articles come to point. The first is from KGBT. Matt Ruszcak was qoted as saying, "We are pretty much the beacon of stability and sustainability." Well, that sounds great.
However, The Monitor states the following, "The city has to figure out how to fix a $4.6 million shortfall in its general fund budget — which includes the public safety departments, the parks and recreation department, the municipal court and City Hall offices –– said City Manager Mike Perez."
If these two talk to each other, they are not listening.

If it doesn’t work do it again.
One of the most successful things in The Valley is some of the shopping malls; the La Plaza Mall, the Mercedes Outlet Mall and Sunrise Mall. Harlingen’s Valley Vista Mall is another matter. This mall is a dismal failure. Some stores have already left. When I visit all I see are teenagers working at the stores and booths and their friends visiting them. I really don’t see any true business going on.
So, when this mall fails what do we do next. Build another one a block away. Stores are already backing out of the deal. They blame the economy. Maybe someone just came to their senses.
