9/16/10 - 10/30/10 - New STC exhibit highlights our Reaction to Space

“Spatial Reflections,” featuring artwork by Jerry Lyles, will be on display at the college’s Mid-Valley Campus Library Art Gallery located at 400 N. Border Weslaco, TX 78596 from September 16 to October 30. On Thursday, September 23, art talks will be held at 2:30 p.m. at STC’s Mid Valley Campus Library Bldg E. An opening reception will take place September 23 at the same location from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Admission to the exhibition and reception is free and open to the public.

The exhibit features artwork by Jerry Lyles an artist who’s paintings are derived from his own observation to the environment around him. His interest range from the tension between space and our own reaction, another of his interest includes the sky which is the subject of some of his paintings too. The motivation of his analysis on space comes from questions like how our space is being used, who is in control, what do we see of value around our environment and how it is interpreted. The work he develops shows us the connection we have to the space around us.

In regards to Lyles’s work, STC’s Library Art Gallery Associate Sofia K. Vestweber said, “His landscape paintings are both realistic and abstract at the same time. His interest with space and light create reactionary environments for the viewer as well as elicit a renewed sense of self, including an investigation of personal identity and place.”

STC’s Library Art Gallery Program exhibits regional, national and international artwork, explores new visions and theories of creativity, and introduces innovative artistic expressions to the South Texas region.

For more information contact Sofia K. Vestweber at 956-872-3488 or at libraryart@southtexascollege.edu, or visit http://lag.southtexascollege.edu.
